You have a judgment. What, exactly, did you win?

A judgment records a court's decision. Its practical effect depends on the relief awarded, its status, the governing law, and what happens after entry.

01

Read the operative language

The first task is not to summarize the lawsuit. It is to identify exactly what the judgment orders or awards, against whom, and in whose favor.

A money judgment, a declaratory judgment, and an order requiring action are not interchangeable. The enforcement path begins with the actual text.

  • Parties and capacity
  • Relief awarded
  • Entry date and court
02

Check what happened after entry

Post-judgment motions, amendments, appeals, stays, settlements, assignments, and partial payments may change the practical picture. A docket entry or older copy may not tell the whole story.

  • Finality and appeal posture
  • Amendments or stays
  • Payments, assignments, and satisfaction
